La Berta, a wine producer in the Emila Romagna region of Italy, asked me to come and photograph a new vineyard being planted. La Berta is one of those small, quality producers that prefer to do everything in the traditional way. So the new vines are planted meticulously by hand, one by one.

Cookbook - Tuscany

I've just come back from a week in Tuscany shooting for a book on local cuisine. The images were made at two fantastic locations, Casa Ombuto and Torre del Tartufo, which offer one-week cookery classes through Tuscookany. I was working with three chefs, Paola Baccetti, Franco Palandra and Laura Giusti, each with their own style and personality which came through in nearly 80 traditional, and not-so-traditional, Tuscan recipies.

The book will be published by Simebooks early next year.

Tech: All these images were shot with natural light but controlled with a range of diffusers and reflectors to give the shape and quality of light I wanted. I only used two lenses during the shoot, a 60mm macro and an 80mm Zork with movements to shift the plane of focus.

Fèlsina - Grape Harvest

Technogym

The brochure I shot for Technogym last year has now been published. Technogym is the world leader in sports training equipment and this brochure marks their entry into providing solutions for medical practitioners.

Tech: we shot this over six days in two studios, building the set in one studio while shooting in the other. That meant that each day started with a whole new set of challenges in terms of lighting and models. Everything was shot hand-held with a Nikon D3x and up to ten Broncolor strobes. The daylight studio created the biggest challenge as the weather, and therefore the light, was changing continuously. My trusty Quadra saved the day more than once with its speed and portability.

Laura Pozzi did a great job with the styling and Arcangelo Piai worked as my assistant throughout the shoot. Art direction and graphic design by Faberi Associati.

Best Western Villa Pace Hotel Bolognese

Spent a couple of days last week shooting this hotel near Treviso that needed to update the images on their website. Thanks to Alessandro for doing a great job assisting. I'll be back to finish shooting there next month.

Tech: I'm using a mixture of natural light and flash in these shots. The interiors are made with multiple exposures and layered in Photoshop to create the final effect. I like to try and keep things as natural as possible to maintain the atmosphere of the room, adding a touch of light when necessary to highlight a particular area. Using Elinchrom 600 watt and Quadra heads.

Progeo - More from Berlin

The Progeo brochure I shot in Berlin during the Spring has just been published. As always the company wanted a different take on wheelchair users, this time opting for an urban feel. Art direction by Delineo Design. The photographs will also be used by Potsdamer Platz for their marketing.

Tech: really simple, fast shooting in bad weather. Just hand-held and a small Nikon flash off-camera.

Fèlsina - Grapes

I had a call from Fèlsina, a quality wine producer in Tuscany, last week asking if I could come and photograph their grapes. I had to break into my holiday to go down there but it was a case of now or never.

Tech: According to the position of the sun I either used a large Lastolite or a little flash from the Quadra to get the grapes lit nicely. It was nearly 100°F out in the vineyards so we had to work quickly.

The Chairs Project

I'm still shooting for this project which is going to be exhibited in Treviso in the middle of October. The series aims to describe a community through the chairs found in its public spaces. The exhibition is being organised by Spazio Paraggi Gallery in Treviso. Here are two shots I made yesterday.

Front Cover - Geo (France)

One of my images from Brittany has made the front cover of Geo magazine in France. It's always a nice feeling to see your work on a cover, especially for a magazine like Geo. The shot is of Les Aiguilles de Port Coton on the coast of Belle-Ile. Another of those shots you have to get up painfully early for, but it was worth it in this case.

Progeo - Berlin

Here's a couple of images from a recent series I made for Progeo wheelchairs in Berlin. We spent two wet days shooting around Potsdamer Platz and the images will be used both in Progeo's new brochure and for Potsdamer Platz's marketing.

Tech: The cold and rain made this a difficult shoot. I was working in poor light but was helped by the D3s with it's amazing sensor and a couple of hand-held Nikon flash guns - strobist style.

Villa Cordevigo 2

I was back at Villa the other day to finish shooting for their new website and brochure, including this shot of their newly built pool.

Tech: There was no current in the new dining area so I had to hide a couple of 600watt Elinchroms in there pointing up to the ceiling to give a nice light. I put a Quadra out of shot to the left to illuminate the olive tree. Then it was just a question of waiting for the right moment as the twilight set in.

North Devon

I've just spent a week touring the north coast of Devon in a VW camper van. Great fun, beautiful coastline and plenty of weather, as always.

Here's the cover and story page from the Fanco Mussida shoot I did a couple of months ago for Valore Alimentare.
Tech: I had about 30 minutes to make these shots during a break at the music school that Mussida runs in Milan. I wanted to get him in at least three different locations and I was working without an assistant so I had to keep things simple and fast. I used a single Quadra head with a 60cm softbox.

FROM THE ARCHIVE: Vukovar

I went twice to Vukovar shooting a documentary project to mark the 10th anniversary of the war there. A Croatian town near the border with Serbia, it suffered terribly during a three-month siege in 1991 that left 3000 dead and 15,000 homes destroyed.

It's a project, and an experience, that has stayed with me in the ten years since I shot it. I went there to offer an alternative to the drama of photojournalism. To re-visit a community that had experienced extreme crisis and to photograph it in a quiet and considered way.

The images were never published. I remember that the Independent Magazine and BBC Television, amongst others, were ready to run the series to mark the 10th anniversary, and then on September 11th 2001 some planes flew in to the Twin Towers in New York and everything changed. The Balkans were no longer news. There was new drama unfolding elsewhere.

That, in fact, was precisely the point.

So the images stay hidden and unspeaking in sheets of negative holders, contact prints and scanned files and all the work and thought that went in to producing them remains somehow unsatisfied.

Here is one image from the series that has always intrigued me. I'm not sure if it talks of history or secrets or psychology or horror. Perhaps that is it's strength. It evokes feelings that are hard to define.

Fèlsina - Vinitaly

I've just finished a job for the wine producer Fèlsina in Tuscany which included a super-sized image for their stand at the Vinitaly fair in Verona this week.

Tech: this was quite a challenge because the image needed to be printed at 6 meters by 3 meters and was going to be viewed from quite close on the stand so the quality needed to be exceptional. I used a Manfrotto Panoramic head and a 60mm lens centered over it's nodal point and then made 27 exposures (three rows of nine images) to produce a file equivalent to 145 megapixels. The image was reproduced on transparent material and back-lit on the stand to produce a nice 3-dimensional quality.

Franco Mussida

I was recently asked to make some portraits of the musician Franco Mussida, guitarist with PFM, the mythical Italian rock band from the 1970s and 80s. He now runs a music school in Milan and this is where I made the portraits. Here's one that didn't make the cut. I'll show some more once the magazine is published.

Tech: Really simple set-up here, using the Quadra again with a 60cm soft box mounted on it. That's all.

Chairs (revisited)

I'm currently working on a project for an exhibition that will be held later this year in Treviso. It's something I originally started in the UK ten years ago and I'm reshooting it now here in Italy.

The idea is to describe a community through the chairs found in its public spaces. So I'll be visiting bars and schools and administrative buildings over the coming months to put together what should be an interesting set of images.

I'm following a particular strategy with these photographs, shooting the chairs against a flat-walled background. The background is actually as important as the chair itself, the two together providing enough clues to establish the setting - but not always. I'm happy to leave an element of doubt.

Tech: I'll be making large prints from these images so I need big files. I'm shooting on a Nikon D7000 with a 24mm PC-E lens (with movements) and a Jumbo MBS head. This allows me to keep the lens fixed in position while I shift the camera body vertically to make three exposures. These are then stitched together to create the final image.

Trees (continued)

Here another image from the trees series I was shooting in the winter. Now the season 's changing I should be out to shoot some more on this soon.

Tech: In this series I'm trying to make the image itself, the two-dimensional 'thing' that the image is, a protagonist in the work on equal footing with the subject. To say 'this is not a tree, this is a photograph of a tree'. Using layers and textures to build up a kind of surface that gives the image a tangible quality.

Apartaménto Hoffman

I'm working on a series of interiors at different night clubs at the moment. Here are some shots from Apartaménto Hoffman which is furnished as the home of this mysterious, theatrical character and it has a decadent (and wonderfully tarnished) salon feel to it. The Skaworkers

I'm not really a band photographer but the singer is a friend of mine so what could I say? These are The Skaworkers. Seven local heroes.

Tech: I'd scouted this wall the day before the shoot, looking for a location that would give me a strong graphic element and a clean background. I figured lining the guys up along the wall would solve the challenge of composing seven people together and give them a certain presence. I took along some extra lighting but didn't use any of it in the end. The sun did it's job and some trees filtered it enough to break up the flatness.

The cookery book I was shooting in the south of Italy last year has just been published by Sime Books. Puglia in Cucina (Apulian Cookery) is a 288-page hardcover combining recipes and food photography with images from around the region to give a taste of its lifestyle and culture.

Mauritius

Here are a couple of shots from Mauritius. Beautiful place, of course, and great people, but the weather was humid and rainy for much of the week.

I still need to work through the photos I made there. Once done they'll be available through Simephoto here in Italy and 4Corners Images in London.

Tech: This was my first trip out with the Nikon D7000. It's small and light, so great for travel, and the image quality is impressive. It's only let down by a too sensitive shutter release and limited bracketing. The body and controls are a bit fiddly compared to the D2x/D3s but for a small, inexpensive camera to travel with it's pretty good.

Mauritius Photography Workshop

Here's a little backstage from the workshop I presented in Mauritius last week. I was invited there by the tour operator Francorosso after winning a competition organised by TAU Visual. My friend and colleague Arcangelo Piai came along to help and together we ran a 6-day course covering everything from light and composition, portraits to story-telling.

The first shot, 'Paradiso' was made at night using the light from a cell phone to paint with during a 2-minute exposure. Just for fun.

My promotional book for 2011 has been sent out to selected clients and design agencies. Titled Superficial, it presents itself as 'an interesting but essentially meaningless collection of images', each one representing a surface of some kind. The idea was to present something of purely graphic interest rather than trying to show any particular aspect of my commercial work.

Cooking School

Two days of cooking with chef Pierangelo Barontini for Valore Alimentare Magazine. This is the third year we've worked together so it all went pretty smoothly. The images will be published over the coming year as a series of seasonal recipies.

Tech: A mixture of natural light and flash using the Quadra and a 600watt monolite. The main problem was working in a small, fast-moving kitchen and having to move lights quickly for each shot.

FROM THE ARCHIVE: King's Hill

I wanted to re-visit some of the projects I've done in the distant past, perhaps as a way of exploring some photographic ideas which I'd like to put back into my current work.

First up is this series on an alternative community in the south of England. I first met them over twenty years ago on a site near Glastonbury in the south of England when I was drifting around.

Here's a shot from that first body of work. It's an image that's remained one of my personal favourites for its simplicity and complexity. For me it raises a number of ideas around the themes of identity and portraiture; the blank canvas, the dark subject recalling the silhouette portraits of the late 18th century, the juxtaposition of the mother and child painting on the wall, and the detail of the young girls eyes peering over the top of the canvas. It's an image that I'm yet to tire of after all these years.

That was back in 1990 and ten years later I returned to Glastonbury to find them again to follow on the project as part of my degree course at Newport. The community had since moved on to a piece of land out of town which they now owned. They continued to be dedicated to this alternative lifestyle in something of an experiment in sustainable living.

I stayed with them over a period of two weeks, documenting their daily lives and producing a series of portraits. By now I was shooting in colour, using a medium format Bronica SQA and I still love the feel and quality of these images.

It's interesting to think that the whole series was produced with one camera, two lenses, some 400asa film and natural light. There is something liberating about the simplicity of this aproach. Perhaps a simplicity that particularly suited the subject matter. Perhaps a simplicity that let me concentrate on the subject and not on the technology.

This project also stays in my mind because it was my first published piece. The story appeared in the Observer Life Magazine over two double-page spreads.

Another ten years have passed since then. Perhaps it's time to go find my friends again.

Workshop

Tau Visual, an Italian association of professional photographers, was asked to find two photographers to present workshops in Zanzibar and Mauritius for Francorosso and I was lucky enough to be offered one of them.

Tech: This was actually made on a cloudy day in the middle of winter. I found a corner of blue sky, shot from a low angle to emphasise the few plants that were growing, and added some flash from the Quadra to give a sunny feel.

Tech: The harsh winter sun made a difficult light for the portraits and we were restricted to where and when we could make the picture. Rather than trying to do anything clever I concentrated on getting a clean, formal shot of all three men, using the Quadra to fill-in the strong shadows.

Hydroven

A series of images for Hydroven, an engineering company in the north of Italy. The work is being used in a calander with a conceptual theme for each month which doubles as a motivational tool for employees. Commissioned through Fluid Design Lab.

Tech: The challenge here was to shoot all 12 images in a single day having to locate each scene and create an interesting lighting on the hop. The composition for each shot had to allow space for the title word, copy and logo.

Ecor

A week travelling across the north of Italy for Ecor, the country's main distributor of organic products. Companies included Santa Rita (pictured), one of the top producers of Parmiggiano Reggiano cheese.

Tech: I was shooting in dark environments for this job and travelling in the worst possible season with a lot of rain which hampered the exterior shots we needed. The D3s and Quadra combination saved the day again with enough flexibility to clean-up and balance interior lights and provide some interesting options for the portraits. The picture shown used two Quadra heads, the main source with an umbrella and a direct light from behind to fill-in and sculpture the right side of the face.

Tunisia

A week shooting in the north of Tunisia for Sime Photo. The work covers Tunis, Carthage, Hammamet and Monastir and should be available on-line around the end of the year.

Tech: Not an easy job, this one. The weather was changing by the minute with sun cloud and rain almost every day which made it difficult to plan shooting locations at their ideal time. I usually use the Photographers Ephemaris to plan trips like this.. a free program linked to Google Maps which lets you track the movement of the sun during the day at any chosen location. It can save a good deal of time, making sure you're always in the right place at the right time, but if the weather turns bad then those plans go out the window.

This is probably the last travel series I'll be shooting on the D2x. In the future I'll be using the D7000 which has a slightly higher pixel count, better results at high ASA, HD video and, more importantly, much less bulk and weight to carry around. The D2x has been a faithful tool over the years and still produces stunning results when the lighting is perfect.

Castel Brando

Just finished a new series of images for Castel Brando, a luxury hotel in the north of Italy - here's a small selection.

Tech: For some of the rooms I was able to maintain a more or less natural lighting using what was available and controlling the highlights with exposure fusion in post-processing. Other shots needs a combination of flah and ambient light. My assistant travelled the room with the Quadra to illuminate specific areas and then she was removed in post-processing.

Ivrea Foto Festival

My series In a Dark Time will be on show at the Ivrea Foto Festival in Italy all through October. The series was made in 2008 to mark the 90th anniversary of the war on the Italian front and was published by Canova in the book, 'Piccole Memorie dalla Grande Gurerra'.

Valore Alimentare Ad Campaign

Just finished an advertising campaign for Valore Alimentare magazine. The project involved photographing six models from different age groups reading the magazine in a related context. The work was commissioned through Metalli-Lindberg and will be published over the coming year.

Tech: We wanted to create something of an un-natural lighting for the subject, using soft tones to contrast with the bright colour of the magazine. I used a combination of lighting with umbrella and direct flash and a 'snooted' flash focused on the cover to make it pop. We also had to keep the composition and background simple to allow for text and to keep the image readable when printed small.

De Marchi

New images for De Marchi's summer brochure. The company, based in the north of Italy, produces technical clothing for cyclists. Commissioned through What! Design

Tech: The brief was to create dynamic, blurred images with a point of light focused on a detail of the clothing. I used a Lensbaby 3D lens which can be flexed to distort the image while leaving a sharp 'sweet spot' which you can place where you like. In reality its hard to use on moving subjects and the sweet spot can be hit and miss. In this image it creates a sense of movement even though the cyclist was still. The flash is snooted to create a narrow point of light while the ambient is underexposed to create some more drama. The technique was repeated to produce a series of images in the same style for this brochure.

Puglia Cookery

A week touring the Puglia region in the south of Italy for a cookery book to be published later this year.

Tech: Most of the food shots were made with a Zörk Rodenstock lens which can be flexed to extend of reduce the depth of field. Lighting was mostly natural with reflectors and some subtle flash to bring out the texture and give depth to the food. I was working on a tight schedule and with now stylist or assistant here so it was quite a tough job.

I'm starting to work on a new multimedia project at the Zion Rock Club. This will be photography based with some video. I'll be making a series of portraits at the club as well as some interior details. These will then go together to describe a feeling of anticipation before a concert.
